When and how to cite
Cite whenever you use someone else’s words, data, ideas or images. Common knowledge in your field does not need a citation; if unsure, cite.
A direct quotation needs quotation marks and a page number. A paraphrase must change both wording and structure — and still needs a citation.
Example
Quote: “Feedback is most effective when timely” (Hattie, 2009, p. 174). Paraphrase: Hattie (2009) argues that prompt feedback has the greatest effect.
Exercise
Save one excerpt from a source, marking it as quotation or paraphrase with a page number.
